Oh look, Dubai Mall is facing the wrong way

Dubai Metro is to launch on 9 September and my son is quite excited about the prospect of his first trip. All I can think about, however, is this ridiculous ad.

mycitymymetroIt is wrong on so many levels, but what puzzles me the most is why the Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates is facing Al Barsha rather than Sheikh Zayed Road, and why the ski slope is heading in the wrong direction too. Surely attention to detail is important.

And how is any prospective Dubai Metro user going to be able to make an informed decision about their nearest station when, according to this ad, Dubai Mall is also facing the wrong way and is straddling about 12 lanes of double-decker highway? In fact, the tip of Dubai Mall is located directly on top of my flat. Not a good start.

Reminds me of when a few years ago when we flipped a photo of London (featuring the houses of parliament and the tower etc.) for a travel feature, and our British creative director freaked out because the perspective we ended up with didn’t technically exist. In our defence, we were ignorant Saffas though.

In the map case, the ad peeps seem to have gone for cute, rather than correct…

I quite like it, it looks a bit like a toy town with all Dubai’s crazy landmarks. Roll on September

Depicts Dubai exactly as it is in my head.
    On Crack.

  4. So… less time doing PR for themselves (Al Bayan, May 3, 2009 – p. 8) and more time getting it right. Isn’t this part of Saatchi & Saatchi’s campaign for the RTA?

I think it is the greatest thing i have ever seen on my whole life.

    Ohhh. Very well spotted.

Don’t you just love it when Big Mouth at Saatchi have Small Eyes!
