A ‘noteworthy’ winner in Cannes Lions outdoor

Though the region missed out on outdoor and radio Lions in Cannes last night, the cheers from the South African contingent could probably have been heard in their home nation. Johannesburg’s TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris picked up the outdoor grand prix for their outstanding work for the campaigning newspaper The Zimbabwean.

The entire campaign, which railed against the Robert Mugabe–led government, was printed on the trillion dollar notes of Zimbabwe’s devastatingly devalued currency, which has effectively made it worthless.

The work also collected a gold in the media Lions, thought the media jury confided it came very close to picking up the grand prix in that category too. That honour eventually went to Japan’s JWT Tokyo and their work for Kit-Kat, which transformed the snack into an integral part of Japan’s end-of-year school exams culture.

The Middle East also had cause to celebrate last night with the silver and bronze trophies it gained in the Media category.
